Győri ETO FC, founded in 1904, is one of the most successful clubs from outside Budapest in Hungarian football history. Its greatest international success came in the 1964/65 season, reaching the European Cup semi-finals — eliminating Lokomotiv Sofia and Dutch side DWS along the way, before falling to that season's eventual finalists, Benfica (0–5 on aggregate).

The club's golden era, spanning the 1960s and 1980s (titles in 1963, 1982 and 1983), stands in painful contrast to the crisis that followed in later decades — in 2015 the club was relegated all the way down to Hungary's third tier. The climb back took almost a decade: promotion to the second division in 2017, and only reaching the top flight again in 2024.

That hard-fought return, however, ended in spectacular fashion — just one year after promotion to the top division, in the 2025/26 season, the green-and-whites claimed their fifth Hungarian championship, their first since 2013. The team play their home matches at ETO Park in Győr.

Győr – a Hungarian City Between Budapest and Vienna

Győr sits in northwestern Hungary, at the confluence of the Danube, the Mosoni-Duna, the Rába, and the Rábca rivers, almost exactly halfway between Budapest and Vienna. This location has made it an important stop on Central European trade routes for centuries. Settlement here dates back to Celtic and Roman times, when the Roman town was known as Arrabona. Over the centuries the city endured Mongol invasions and Ottoman Turkish wars, and later flourished during the Baroque era — a legacy still visible in the many Baroque townhouses and churches of its old town.

Modern Győr blends history with industry. Its center still invites strolls through narrow, winding old-town streets past the cathedral and the fortified bishop's castle, while the city is also a major industrial hub, home to a large Audi factory. Győr is also known for its sporting success, especially in women's handball, as well as for its festivals and lively café culture, making it a popular stop for travelers moving between Budapest and Vienna.

Győr is pronounced roughly like "DYUR" (IPA: /ɟøːr/) – the Hungarian "Gy" sounds close to a soft "d" (similar to the "d" in "duty"), followed by a long, rounded "ő" vowel.
