Zhenis AstanaFK Zhenis Astana is a Kazakh football club founded in 1964 in what was then Tselinograd (today's Astana) under the name Dinamo. Over its more than six-decade history, the club has changed its name several times, reflecting the region's successive economic and political transformations: it became Tselinnik in 1975, competed as Tsesna in the 1990s, and in 1999, in newly independent Kazakhstan, adopted the name Zhenis, meaning "Victory" in Kazakh.
The name proved prophetic — as early as the 2000 season, the team, coached by Sergei Gorokhovodatsky, claimed its first Kazakhstan championship, with players such as Vladimir Nidergaus and Azamat Niyazymbetov shining in the title-winning squad. The following year, in 2001, the club added the Kazakhstan Cup to its trophy cabinet, earning its first-ever appearance in European competition. Zhenis won its second league title in 2006, under Dutch coach Arno Pijpers.
The club's furthest run in European competition came in the 2007–08 season, when it eliminated Georgian champions Olimpi Rustavi in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League, winning the tie 3–0 on aggregate, before falling in the second qualifying round to Norway's Rosenborg. This remains one of the few occasions on which a club from Kazakhstan's capital made its mark on the wider international stage.
In subsequent years, the club underwent further changes of name and ownership — in 2009, following a declaration of bankruptcy, it was relegated from the top flight for the first time in its history, and in later seasons it competed under names including Namys and Astana-1964. The club returned to its historic name, Zhenis, in 2021. The team plays its home matches at the Kazhymukan Munaitpasov Stadium in Astana, and its story remains closely tied to the development of Kazakhstan's capital over the past half-century.
