Ordabasy Shymkent is a club whose modern identity brings together the history of several football teams from southern Kazakhstan. Its football tradition can be traced back to 1949, when a team was established in Shymkent that was later known under names including Metallurg. The local football structure subsequently underwent several organisational and name changes. In 2000, Zhiger and Tomiris merged to form Dostyk, while the club adopted the name Ordabasy before the 2003 season. For this reason, sources sometimes use 1949 as the beginning of the club's historical tradition and 2000 as the formation date of its modern structure.

The name Ordabasy refers to a place of particular importance in the history of Kazakhstan, associated with the unity of the Kazakh zhuzes and resistance to the Dzungar invasions. The club represents Shymkent, one of Kazakhstan's largest cities, and traditionally plays in blue and white. The team's nickname also reflects these colours. The club's identity has additionally been associated with regional symbolism, including elements connected with the history of southern Kazakhstan.

The most successful period in Ordabasy's history came between 2011 and 2023. In 2011, the club won the Kazakhstan Cup for the first time, defeating Tobol Kostanay 1โ€“0 in the final. A year later it added the Kazakhstan Super Cup after a 1โ€“0 victory over Shakhter Karagandy. Its second national cup triumph came in 2022, when Ordabasy defeated Akzhayik Oral 5โ€“4 after extra time. The greatest achievement, however, arrived in 2023. Ordabasy won the Kazakhstan Premier League for the first time, collecting 58 points from 26 matches. The championship team was coached by Belarusian manager Aleksandr Sednyov.

The club's European history has largely been built in UEFA qualifying rounds. One of its strongest campaigns came in the 2019/20 Europa League. Ordabasy eliminated Torpedo Kutaisi, winning both legs, 1โ€“0 at home and 2โ€“0 away. In the second qualifying round, it drew 1โ€“1 away to Mladรก Boleslav before losing the home leg 3โ€“2. In 2023, the club faced Legia Warsaw in the Conference League qualifiers. The first match in Shymkent ended 2โ€“2, while Legia won the return leg 3โ€“2 to progress 5โ€“4 on aggregate. A year later, Ordabasy made its Champions League qualifying debut. The tie against Moldova's Petrocub ended in a 1โ€“0 aggregate defeat after a goalless draw in Shymkent and a 1โ€“0 loss in the return match.

The historic home of Ordabasy is the Central Stadium named after Kazhymukan Munaitpasov, one of Kazakhstan's most famous wrestlers. The venue has been an important sporting landmark in Shymkent for decades. In 2026, the club continues to play its home league matches there, while construction is under way on a new Ordabasy Arena, planned as a UEFA Category 4 stadium.
