Tobol Kostanay Tobol of Kostanay is one of the best-known and most successful clubs in Kazakh football. Its history dates back to 1967, when the team began competing in Soviet football competitions. Over the following decades, it played under several names, including Avtomobilist, Burevestnik, Energetik, Kustanayets and Khimik. The name Tobol has been used since 1995.
One of the most important periods in the club's history came at the beginning of the 21st century. Tobol regularly finished near the top of the Kazakhstan Premier League, becoming runners-up in 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2008. The club had to wait until 2010 for its first league title. Coached by Ravil Sabitov, the Kostanay side won the Kazakhstan championship for the first time in its history. A second title followed in 2021, confirming Tobol as one of the country's leading clubs.
The 2007 season holds a special place in the history of Tobol. The Kostanay club won the Kazakhstan Cup for the first time, defeating Ordabasy Shymkent in the final. Its UEFA Intertoto Cup campaign was an even more notable achievement. Tobol began the tournament with a 3–0 win over Zestafoni, then eliminated Slovan Liberec after winning the second leg in the Czech Republic 2–0. In the third round, the Kazakh side defeated Greek club OFI Crete 1–0 in both matches and reached the second qualifying round of the UEFA Cup. UEFA listed Tobol among the eleven winners of the 2007 Intertoto Cup.
The 2007 European campaign remains the club's most distinctive international achievement. Particularly memorable was the away victory over Slovan Liberec, with Tobol winning 2–0, as well as the two-legged tie against OFI, in which the Kazakh side kept clean sheets in both matches. The team could not progress further in the UEFA Cup, however, losing 1–0 and 2–0 to Dyskobolia Grodzisk Wielkopolski in the next round.
One of the most important figures in Tobol history is Nurbol Zhumaskaliyev, a long-serving player and Kazakhstan international. In 2005, he was named Kazakhstan's Footballer of the Year. Another important figure of the club's successful period in the mid-2000s was Ulugbek Bakaev, who finished as the top scorer of the Kazakhstan championship in 2004 and 2010. In the memorable Intertoto Cup match against Zestafoni, Nurbol Zhumaskaliyev, Ruslan Baltiev and Ulugbek Bakaev scored for Tobol.
The club's home ground is Central Stadium in Kostanay, an arena opened in 1964. The club's official historical information gives its capacity as 8,050. Tobol has traditionally been associated with yellow and green, although the team has used other combinations during different periods of its history.
In the following years, Tobol maintained its position among Kazakhstan's leading clubs. After its league titles in 2010 and 2021, the club added further Kazakhstan Cup victories in 2023 and 2025. Its long history dating back to the Soviet era, two national championships and outstanding UEFA Intertoto Cup campaign make Tobol one of the most distinctive football clubs in northern Kazakhstan.
