Kairat Almaty stands as the historic flagship of Kazakh football, a club whose identity was forged as the sole representative of the Kazakh SSR in the Soviet Top League across 24 seasons. Founded in 1954 as Lokomotiv Alma-Ata and renamed Kairat in 1956 — a word signifying strength — the side earned the enduring nickname Halyq komandasy, the Team of the Nation, for carrying an entire republic’s sporting hopes on the national stage. Its highest Soviet finish came in 1986 with seventh place, while earlier triumphs included two Soviet First League titles in 1976 and 1983 and the USSR Federation Cup in 1988. In 1971 the club also claimed the European Railways Cup, becoming the first Soviet side to lift a European trophy.

After Kazakhstan’s independence the yellow-and-blacks — Sary-Qaralar — captured the inaugural Premier League title in 1992 and have since added four more championships, most recently in 2024 and 2025, bringing the total to five. They hold the national record with ten Kazakhstan Cup victories and have lifted the Super Cup three times. On the European stage Kairat became the first Kazakh club to reach a UEFA group stage when it contested the inaugural Conference League in 2021/22. Four years later the Almaty side scripted a still greater chapter by overcoming Celtic on penalties to qualify for the league phase of the 2025/26 Champions League, turning the long journey to the foothills of the Tian Shan into one of the competition’s most distinctive challenges.

Home matches are staged at the Central Stadium in Almaty, a venue of approximately 23 800 seats whose historical name remains the club’s spiritual base. The club’s academy ranks among the region’s most productive, regularly feeding the national teams with homegrown talent. In the modern era Kairat has also drawn established international names in the later stages of their careers; Russian forward Andrey Arshavin spent three seasons in Almaty from 2016 to 2018, while Brazilian striker VĆ”gner Love arrived in 2020 and played a decisive role in the league title that ended a long domestic drought. Through its blend of Soviet-era prestige, domestic silverware and pioneering European campaigns, Kairat Almaty continues to embody the ambitions of Kazakh football far beyond its borders.
