Hibernian FC is one of the oldest and most distinguished clubs in Scottish football, with a history closely connected to Edinburgh's Irish heritage. The club was founded in 1875 by members of the city's Irish community, while its name derives from the Latin term for Ireland. For more than a century, Hibernian have been closely associated with Leith, the port district of Edinburgh, which remains central to the club's identity. Its distinctive green and white colours have become one of the symbols of the area.

The first major success came at the end of the 19th century. In 1887, Hibernian won the Scottish Cup, defeating Dumbarton 2–1 in the final. A second triumph followed in 1902, while the club won its first Scottish league championship in the 1902/03 season. Three more league titles came during an exceptional period after the Second World War, in 1947/48, 1950/51 and 1951/52. Hibernian are therefore four-time Scottish champions, although their most recent league title came more than seven decades ago.

The late 1940s and 1950s occupy a special place in the club's history because of the attacking line known as the Famous Five. It consisted of Gordon Smith, Bobby Johnstone, Lawrie Reilly, Eddie Turnbull and Willie Ormond. This generation formed the core of the team that won three league championships between 1948 and 1952. Eddie Turnbull also made European history by becoming the first British player to score in the European Cup.

Hibernian's European history began remarkably early. In the 1955/56 season, the club became the first British team to compete in the inaugural European Champion Clubs' Cup. Hibernian defeated German side Rot-Weiss Essen in the first round and then eliminated Djurgårdens IF to reach the semi-finals. There they lost both legs to Stade de Reims, 0–2 in France and 0–1 in Edinburgh. Reaching the last four of the first edition of the competition remains one of the most significant European achievements by a Scottish club.

In later decades, Hibernian added three Scottish League Cup triumphs, in 1972/73, 1991/92 and 2006/07. The first was particularly significant, as Hibs defeated Celtic 2–1 in the December 1972 final.

The most emotional chapter of the modern era, however, concerns the Scottish Cup. Hibernian waited from 1902 until 2016 to lift the trophy again, finally defeating Rangers 3–2 in the final with David Gray scoring the decisive goal in stoppage time. It was the club's third Scottish Cup triumph and brought an end to one of the longest waits between victories in the competition's history.

Hibernian continue to play at Easter Road, located in Leith. The stadium is an important part of the club's identity and a meeting place for generations of supporters from the north-eastern part of Edinburgh. Hibernian's history therefore combines Irish roots, four Scottish league championships, three Scottish Cups and a remarkable European beginning with the traditions of one of the Scottish capital's most distinctive football clubs.
