Aberdeen followed that triumph with another European success later in 1983. In the European Super Cup, the Scottish side faced Hamburg, the reigning European champions. After a 0–0 draw in the first leg in Germany, Aberdeen won the return match at Pittodrie 2–0. Neil Simpson and Mark McGhee scored the goals that secured the trophy. Aberdeen remain the only Scottish club to have won both the European Cup Winners' Cup and the European Super Cup.
The European triumph was part of a wider period of unprecedented success. Aberdeen won the Scottish Cup in 1982 and 1983, then added the league and Scottish Cup double in 1983/84. They retained the league championship the following season, becoming champions in consecutive seasons for the first time in their history. Players such as Gordon Strachan, Willie Miller, Alex McLeish, Mark McGhee and John Hewitt became closely associated with the most successful Aberdeen team of all time, while Ferguson's tactical and organisational work established his reputation before his later career at Manchester United.
The club's domestic record also includes eight Scottish Cups and six Scottish League Cups. Aberdeen were the first club to win the Scottish Cup three consecutive times in the modern era during the 1980s, and their 1990 Scottish Cup victory was notable because they became the first team to win the final on penalties, defeating Celtic in the shoot-out after a 0–0 draw.
Pittodrie itself forms an important part of Aberdeen's history. The stadium has been the club's home since its early years and was the first all-seater stadium in Britain. Its location close to the North Sea and its long association with the Dons have made it one of the most recognisable grounds in Scottish football.
