AIK Solna AIK began life in 1891 not as a football club but as a general athletics society, founded on 15 February at an address on Biblioteksgatan in central Stockholm by brothers from the Behrens family; the club's full name, Allmänna Idrottsklubben, translates simply as "the general sports club", reflecting an original mission open to all sports rather than football specifically. A football department followed in 1896, and by the turn of the century AIK had already become one of Sweden's dominant sides, winning the national championship in 1900 and 1901.
AIK joined the newly formed Allsvenskan in 1924 and won the league title in 1932 and 1937, the latter coinciding with the club's move to the newly built Råsunda Stadium, its home for the following 75 years. A long trophy drought followed, broken only in 1992, and again the following year under a reformed league format. AIK have also enjoyed a modern era of relative success, winning further titles in 1998 and, most recently, in 2018, bringing their total to twelve Swedish championships, a haul that places the club third on the all-time Allsvenskan list, along with a record for the most seasons played in the Swedish top flight.
On the European stage, AIK's highest-profile campaign came in the 1999-2000 UEFA Champions League, when the club, managed by Stuart Baxter, reached the group stage and faced Barcelona, Fiorentina and Arsenal, an experience that remains one of the club's most talked-about forays into continental competition even though results on the pitch proved difficult.
Since 2012, AIK have played their home matches at the Strawberry Arena in neighbouring Solna, having left Råsunda after members voted for the club to move into what was then Sweden's new national stadium. Nicknamed Gnaget and playing in black and yellow, AIK's identity remains inseparable from its rivalry with fellow Stockholm club Djurgården, founded just three weeks after AIK in 1891 and considered the fiercest derby in Swedish football, alongside a wider local rivalry with Hammarby that together define football in the Swedish capital.
