BSC Young Boys BSC Young Boys of Bern are one of the most successful and recognisable clubs in Swiss football. The club was founded in 1898 by four students of the University of Bern, taking a name meant to echo that of Basel's Old Boys. Soon after its formation the club briefly merged with local rivals FC Bern; once that union collapsed, it gave rise to one of Swiss football's fiercest local rivalries.
Young Boys won their first Swiss championship in 1903, and in the following years the team earned the nickname "YB-Viertelstunde" ("the YB quarter of an hour") — a reference to the closing fifteen minutes of matches, when the club's physically superior players would routinely take control against tiring opponents. The club's most fruitful spell came between 1957 and 1960, when Young Boys won four consecutive Swiss titles. In the 1958–59 season they also reached the semi-finals of the European Cup, eliminating Hungary's MTK Budapest along the way; in the semi-final, in front of more than 60,000 spectators at the Wankdorf, they beat Stade de Reims 1–0, only to be knocked out after a 3–0 defeat in Paris.
The club's home ground, the Wankdorf, has its own place in European football history quite apart from Young Boys — it was there, in 1954, that West Germany beat Hungary in the World Cup final, a match later immortalised as the "Miracle of Bern". The current stadium, opened in 2005 on the site of the old ground, was known commercially for a time as the Stade de Suisse, before the historic name Stadion Wankdorf was eventually restored.
After years of financial trouble and relegation to the second division in 1997, Young Boys emerged in the 21st century as the dominant force in Swiss football, winning the national title six times between 2018 and 2024. In total, the club has been champions of Switzerland seventeen times and has won the Swiss Cup on eight occasions. During this period the yellow-and-blacks have become regular participants in the Champions League group stage, recording notable wins over sides including Juventus and Manchester United.
