AFC Ajax is a Dutch football club founded on 18 March 1900 in Amsterdam. The team has won a record 36 Eredivisie titles, 20 KNVB Cups, and 4 European Cup/UEFA Champions League trophies (1971, 1972, 1973, 1995). The club has also won the European Cup Winners' Cup (1987) and the UEFA Cup (1992).

It was in Amsterdam, at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s, that the philosophy of "Total Football" (totaalvoetbal) was born, permanently changing the way the sport is thought about worldwide. Its creator and principal architect was manager Rinus Michels, while its icon and most perfect on-pitch practitioner was Johan Cruyff. Under their joint leadership, Ajax won the European Cup three years in a row, from 1971 to 1973, becoming one of only three clubs in history to achieve that feat. A later generation of outstanding players — including Marco van Basten, Dennis Bergkamp, and Jari Litmanen — laid the foundations for the club's second golden era, which culminated in the 1995 Champions League triumph under manager Louis van Gaal.

The club's football operations have in recent decades often been led by former players and club legends, including goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar and Marc Overmars, underlining the unusually strong bond between successive generations of players and the club. Ajax's operational model has for decades relied on its famous De Toekomst academy, which consistently supplies both the first team and Europe's top leagues with young talent, generating substantial transfer revenue for the club in the process.

Since 1996, the team has played its home matches at the 55,865-capacity Johan Cruyff Arena, named in honour of its greatest academy graduate. Although recent seasons have brought more struggle than triumph, Ajax remains one of the symbols of European football — a model for combining a distinctive football philosophy with a home-grown youth system.
