The Swiss side opened the scoring in the 34th minute through Franck Surdez, but Ajax turned the game around shortly after the break. Julian Brandt equalised in the 53rd minute before Marcos Leonardo put the visitors ahead six minutes later. Sion levelled again in the 71st minute when Ilyas Chouaref converted a penalty, but Ajax responded immediately. Tolu Arokodare restored the Dutch side's lead in the 74th minute, while Davy Klaassen completed the scoring in the 87th after an assist from Arokodare. The 4–2 victory gives Ajax a significant advantage ahead of the second leg in Amsterdam.
