Getafe CF, founded in its current form in 1983, is a club from the outskirts of Madrid that has earned a reputation as one of the most awkward opponents in Spanish football. The Azulones are known for their intensely physical, organised style of play and defensive discipline, which has repeatedly allowed them to upset La Liga's biggest names.

The most memorable night in the club's history came on 10 April 2008 at the Coliseum, in the second leg of the UEFA Cup quarter-final. Getafe led Bayern Munich 3–2 deep into stoppage time of extra time, on the verge of a sensational upset over the German giants, only for Luca Toni to head home an equaliser in the 121st minute, sending Bayern through on away goals with the tie level at 3–3. That same season the club also reached the Copa del Rey final for the second year running.

The club's European pedigree continued into the modern era — in the 2019/20 season, under coach José Bordalás, Getafe reached the round of 16 of the Europa League. The team still plays its home matches at the Coliseum, the stadium that has witnessed the defining moments of the club's short but eventful history.
