Latvia – Baltic football and clubs from Riga

Latvia belongs to the group of smaller European football federations. In the UEFA country ranking, it currently sits around the middle of the fourth decade, between Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The difference between these countries is small, so every progression to another round can affect the standings across this part of the ranking.

Latvian clubs do not yet have a history comparable to teams from Poland, Czechia or Scandinavia, but in recent years they have begun to establish a more regular presence in European competitions. The most important representatives are RFS Riga, Riga FC, Auda Kekava, Valmiera and FK Liepāja.

RFS – the new leader

RFS, or Rīgas Futbola skola, is currently Latvia's most important club. The team from Riga has quickly developed from a youth-oriented project into a domestic leader and regular participant in European qualifying rounds.

In the 2022/23 season, RFS became the first Latvian club to reach the group stage of the UEFA Europa Conference League. On the way, it eliminated Hibernians of Malta and Northern Ireland's Linfield, among others. It was one of the most important moments in the history of modern Latvian football.

In the group stage, RFS faced Fiorentina, Hearts and İstanbul Başakşehir. The Latvians did not progress further, but gained experience against teams from Italy, Scotland and Turkey. Simply reaching this stage increased the club's profile and earned important ranking points for Latvia.

RFS later also reached the UEFA Europa League league phase, eliminating APOEL Nicosia in the play-off round. As a result, the club became the first Latvian team to reach the main phase of European competition more than once.

A notable aspect of RFS is its relatively short history. The club was not a major name for decades, but built its position through youth development, stable management and consistent growth. Today, its European matches are the most important source of ranking points for Latvia.

Riga FC and the capital rivalry

The second major club is Riga FC. It is also based in the capital and has competed with RFS for the Latvian championship and domestic dominance for several seasons.

Riga FC regularly participates in European qualifying rounds. The club has greater financial and organizational ambitions than most Latvian rivals, but its European campaigns have been less consistent than those of RFS. Nevertheless, Riga has earned valuable points and remains one of the country's most important representatives.

The rivalry between RFS and Riga FC illustrates the concentration of Latvian football in the capital. Both clubs have greater resources than teams from other cities, and their matches determine not only the championship but also which club will represent Latvia in the most important European qualifying rounds.

Riga is one of the major sporting cities in the Baltic region. The capital is home to the country's main stadiums, academies, federation headquarters and many sponsors. A large share of Latvia's ranking points comes from clubs based in Riga.

Valmiera, Auda and Liepāja

Valmiera FC has joined the domestic elite in recent years. The club won the Latvian championship and competed in European qualifying rounds. Its development was particularly interesting because Valmiera is not as large a centre as Riga.

The club has relied on youth development and identifying players who can later be sold to stronger leagues. Valmiera has not yet reached the main phase of a European competition, but its results have helped expand the group of Latvian teams capable of competing for ranking points.

FK Auda comes from Ķekava, a town located near Riga. The club reached European qualifying rounds within a relatively short period and earned points for Latvia. Its example shows that even a small centre can build a competitive team with the right organizational structure.

FK Liepāja represents an important Baltic port city. The club has a long history and for many years was one of the country's most frequent participants in European competitions. Its results have been inconsistent, but Liepāja remains an important part of the Latvian football landscape.

Latvia in the UEFA ranking

Latvia currently sits around the middle of the fourth decade of the UEFA country ranking. Its advantage over Bosnia and Herzegovina is minimal, while it is not far ahead of Kosovo. This means that the federation remains part of a very closely matched group of countries with similar potential.

RFS and Riga FC make the largest contributions to Latvia's coefficient. RFS has accumulated more points than the other representatives during the period under consideration, but Riga FC has also produced a solid record.

The biggest recent success was RFS reaching the main phase of the Europa Conference League. Before that, only FK Ventspils had reached the main phase of a European competition, doing so in the UEFA Europa League. RFS therefore became only the second Latvian club to break through the qualifying barrier.

Latvia has not won a European trophy, but it is increasingly making use of the opportunities provided by the Europa Conference League. For small federations, the competition is particularly important because it offers greater opportunities for wins and progression than the Champions League.

Football in the shadow of ice hockey

Latvia is primarily associated with ice hockey. The national ice hockey team has a strong position in the country's sporting culture, and international matches attract considerable attention from fans. Football also competes with basketball and winter sports.

Despite this, football has a long tradition. Latvia was the first Baltic republic to qualify for the European Championship. The national team appeared at the tournament in 2004, with its most memorable moment being a draw with Germany in the group stage.

The Latvian national team has never qualified for the World Cup, but it has managed to defeat stronger opponents in the past. These successes have generally been isolated, however, and the country has not yet produced a generation of players comparable to the best footballers from Finland, Iceland or Croatia.

Stadiums in Riga and along the Baltic coast

One of Latvia's most important football venues is Skonto Stadium in Riga, which hosted national-team matches and major club fixtures for many years. The capital is also home to Daugava Stadium, used for football as well as athletics.

Latvian stadiums are generally modest in size but are well suited to hosting UEFA qualifying matches. Small stands can work in the hosts' favour, as supporters remain close to the pitch.

The climate also has an influence on the football calendar. Latvia has long, cold winters, so league competitions are played mainly from spring to autumn. Clubs use artificial pitches and indoor facilities, while preparations for European qualifying rounds require careful planning.

Latvia's prospects

Latvia currently has two clubs capable of regularly earning points – RFS and Riga FC. Valmiera, Auda and FK Liepāja are trying to close the gap with their capital-city rivals, but their European results have been less consistent.

The biggest challenge is repeatability. RFS has shown that a Latvian club can reach the league phases of the Europa Conference League and Europa League, but a single successful campaign is not enough to produce a lasting rise in the UEFA ranking.
