Shelbourne FCShelbourne FC is one of Ireland's oldest football clubs, founded in 1895 in Dublin's Ringsend district by labourer James Rowan and a group of friends who raised funds for the club's first kit at the Shelbourne House pub. Known today by the nickname The Reds, playing in red and white, the club was among the founding members of the League of Ireland in 1921 and won its first title in the 1925–26 season, finishing ahead of local rivals Shamrock Rovers.
The club's honours include 14 League of Ireland Premier Division titles and 7 FAI Cups, making Shelbourne one of the most decorated sides in Irish football history. Its most recent championship, and the club's first in eighteen years, came in 2024 under manager Damien Duff — a former Republic of Ireland international and two-time Premier League winner with Chelsea, who took charge in 2021 and guided the club back into European competition following his playing career.
The most memorable chapter in the club's European history, however, came earlier, in the 2004–05 season, when Shelbourne, managed by Pat Fenlon, became the first Irish club ever to reach the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. After eliminating Iceland's KR Reykjavík, the side faced Croatia's Hajduk Split — following a 2–3 away defeat, Shelbourne overturned the deficit at Tolka Park with a 2–0 win, courtesy of goals from Dave Rogers and Alan Moore, the latter scoring in stoppage time. Their run culminated in a stunning goalless draw against Spain's Deportivo La Coruña in front of a 24,000-strong crowd at Lansdowne Road. The squad of that era also featured a young Wes Hoolahan, who would go on to become an Ireland international and Premier League player, alongside long-serving club stalwart Ollie Cahill.
A new chapter in the club's European story unfolded in 2025, when Shelbourne, by then under new manager Joey O'Brien, reached the league phase of a UEFA club competition for the first time in their history, eliminating Northern Ireland's Linfield in the play-off round to secure their place in the 2025–26 UEFA Conference League league phase. Since 1989, Shelbourne have played their home matches at Tolka Park in the Drumcondra suburb, a venue with a capacity of over six thousand that has remained the heart of the club and a symbol of Irish club football for decades.
