Shamrock Rovers FC were founded in 1899 in the Dublin district of Ringsend, taking their name from Shamrock Avenue, where the club's founding committee held its meetings. Rovers are the most successful club in the history of Irish football, holding the record for both League of Ireland titles (22) and FAI Cup wins (26), the latter total reached with victory over Cork City in the 2025 final. In that same season, the club also won the league, completing a domestic double for the first time since 1987.

On 25 September 1957, Shamrock Rovers became the first Irish club to play in a European Champion Clubs' Cup match, losing 6–0 to Manchester United at Dalymount Park. The club's most significant European achievement came more than half a century later: in 2011, Rovers overcame Partizan Belgrade in the UEFA Europa League play-off round, becoming the first Irish club ever to reach the group stage of a major UEFA competition. There, the part-time squad, managed by Michael O'Neill, was drawn against Tottenham Hotspur, PAOK and Rubin Kazan, briefly taking the lead away at White Hart Lane before eventually finishing bottom of the group.

The club's domestic dominance has come in distinct waves: six consecutive FAI Cup victories between 1964 and 1969 remain a competition record, while four consecutive league titles in the early 1980s were matched exactly forty years later, between 2020 and 2023. Rovers have also supplied more players to the Republic of Ireland national team than any other club.

Known as The Hoops for their green-and-white horizontally striped shirts, first worn in 1926, Shamrock Rovers played at Milltown's Glenmalure Park from 1926 until 1987, when the ground was controversially sold for development. After more than two decades without a permanent home, the club settled in 2009 at its current stadium, Tallaght Stadium in South Dublin, from where it continues to pursue further European breakthroughs for Irish football.
