Zimbru Chișinău FC Zimbru Chisinau is one of the most important clubs in the history of Moldovan football, with roots reaching back to the Soviet era. The official foundation date is 16 May 1947, when Dinamo Chisinau made its debut in the Soviet championship. Over the following decades, the club changed its name several times, appearing as Burevestnik, Moldova, Avîntul and Nistru, before adopting the name Zimbru in 1991. The club's distinctive yellow-and-green colours have remained an important part of its identity. The name Zimbru refers to the European bison, one of the symbols of the region.
During the Soviet period, the club spent eleven seasons in the top division. Its best finish was sixth place in 1956. Zimbru also became part of Soviet football history through an extraordinary match against Spartak Moscow. On 11 September 1957, the Chisinau side were trailing 4–0 in Moscow but fought back to draw 4–4. According to the Moldovan Football Federation, it remains the only such comeback in the history of Soviet football.
After Moldova gained independence, Zimbru became the dominant force in the country's newly established football competition. The club is the only team to have participated in every edition of Moldova's top division. During the first decade of the national championship, it won eight league titles, in 1992–1996 and 1998–2000. The last of those championships came in 2000. Zimbru's dominance was subsequently challenged and eventually surpassed by Sheriff Tiraspol, but the Chisinau club remains one of the most successful sides in Moldovan football.
The domestic trophy collection also includes six Moldovan Cups, won in 1997, 1998, 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2014, as well as one Moldovan Super Cup, secured in 2014. The 2014 cup final was particularly significant, as Zimbru defeated Sheriff 3–1. It was the club's first major trophy in seven years and represented a return to the domestic spotlight after a period dominated by its Tiraspol rivals.
Zimbru became the first Moldovan club to compete in the UEFA Champions League. Its debut came in the preliminary round of the 1993/94 season, shortly after Moldova's clubs entered European competition. The club has also made numerous appearances in qualifying rounds of the UEFA Cup, Europa League and Conference League. One of its most impressive European ties came in the 1999/2000 season, when Zimbru defeated St Patrick's Athletic in both legs, winning the tie 10–0 on aggregate. Later in the same European campaign, the club faced Tottenham Hotspur in the first round of the UEFA Cup.
Several important figures in Moldovan football have been connected with Zimbru. Among the players associated with the club were Igor Dobrovolski, one of the most prominent footballers born in Moldova, and Pavel Cebanu, who later became a major administrator in Moldovan football. Zimbru also played an important role in developing players for the Moldova national team after independence.
FC Zimbru Chisinau play their home matches at Zimbru Stadium in the Moldovan capital, which opened in 2006. The venue became the club's main home and one of the country's principal football stadiums. Its yellow-and-green colours, history dating back to 1947 and eight league championships during the first decade of independent Moldovan football make Zimbru Chisinau one of the most distinguished clubs in the country's football history.
