Ballkani Suva Reka FC Ballkani is one of the clubs that have undergone the most remarkable transformation in modern Kosovar football. Founded in 1947 in Suhareka, the club initially operated under the name Rinia. Until 1952 it mainly played friendly matches before entering the official Kosovo championship competitions. The name Ballkani was adopted in 1965, when the club came under the management of the local chemical and rubber industry company Ballkan.
One of the most distinctive elements of the club's identity is its orange-and-black colours. According to Ballkani's own historical account, the colours were adopted in 1974, with the choice of orange inspired by the Netherlands team of the era when Johan Cruyff and total football were defining European football. Before that change, Ballkani had primarily appeared in white. Orange subsequently became one of the most recognisable features of the club, while its supporters are known as the Xhebrailat.
For much of its history, Ballkani competed in regional and domestic competitions, and after the Kosovo War the club also went through periods of sporting reconstruction. It returned to the Superleague in 2010, although it later suffered another relegation. The decisive turning point came after promotion back to the top flight in the 2017/18 season. Improved organisation and investment in the team quickly transformed the Suhareka club into a contender for major domestic honours.
The breakthrough came in 2022, when Ballkani won the Kosovo championship for the first time. The team finished the season with 76 points from 36 matches, recording 23 victories. That success began the most successful period in the club's history. Ballkani retained the title in 2022/23 and won it for a third consecutive time in 2023/24. In doing so, the club equalled the achievement of Besa Peja, which had previously been the only team to win three consecutive Kosovo championships, between 2005 and 2007. Ilir Daja was the coach during this championship-winning sequence.
The 2023/24 season also produced Ballkani's first Kosovo Cup triumph. In the final on 22 May 2024, the club faced FC Prishtina. The match finished 2–2 after regular time and extra time, before Ballkani won the penalty shootout 4–2. The victory followed the club's third consecutive league title earlier in the same month, giving Ballkani its first domestic double.
European football has had an even greater historical significance for Ballkani. The club made its European debut in July 2022, beginning in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League against Žalgiris Vilnius. After elimination, Ballkani entered the UEFA Conference League qualifying rounds. The Kosovar side eliminated La Fiorita, KÍ Klaksvík and Shkupi, becoming the first club from Kosovo to reach the group stage of a UEFA club competition. The tie against La Fiorita included particularly emphatic victories of 4–0 away and 6–0 at home.
In the 2022/23 UEFA Europa Conference League group stage, Ballkani faced Slavia Prague, CFR Cluj and Sivasspor. The Kosovar champions collected four points and recorded a notable away victory over Sivasspor. Their presence in the group stage was historically significant regardless of the final standings, as Ballkani became the first Kosovar club to reach the group stage of a UEFA competition. A year later, the club repeated the achievement by qualifying for the 2023/24 Conference League group stage, where it faced opponents including Dinamo Zagreb and Viktoria Plzeň. UEFA records 24 Ballkani matches in the group stage of the Conference League across the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons.
The club's home ground is Stadiumi i Qytetit in Suhareka. The venue did not meet UEFA requirements for European fixtures, so during Ballkani's historic 2022 campaign the team played its European home matches at Fadil Vokrri Stadium in Pristina. Despite the use of the national capital's main stadium for continental games, Ballkani has retained a strong local identity and its rise has become one of the clearest examples of a club from outside Kosovo's traditional football centres establishing itself among the country's leading sides.
The modern history of FC Ballkani is therefore defined by rapid sporting progress. Three consecutive Kosovo championships between 2022 and 2024, the club's first Kosovo Cup in 2024 and two successive appearances in the UEFA Conference League group stage have established Ballkani as one of the most important clubs of the modern Kosovar game. Its rise is particularly notable because much of the club's national prominence was built in a relatively short period, culminating in a historic first for Kosovo on the European stage.
