Apollon Limassol is one of the most successful football clubs in Cyprus and a source of pride for the island's second-largest city. The club was founded on 14 April 1954 by a group of young Limassol residents led by Christakis Pavlides, taking its name and emblem from Apollo, the ancient Greek god of light, music and prophecy. Barely a decade after its founding, Apollon had already won its first two Cypriot Cups, in 1966 and 1967, laying the groundwork for its later status as one of the country's leading clubs.

Apollon's honours list includes four Cypriot championships (1991, 1994, 2006, 2022), nine Cypriot Cups and four Super Cups. On the European stage, the club has repeatedly reached the UEFA Europa League group stage, and in the 2017–18 and 2018–19 campaigns it drew with sides such as Olympique Marseille, Lazio, Everton and Atalanta, taking points off established European names and earning a reputation as an awkward opponent.

The heartbeat of football life in Limassol remains the derby against AEL Limassol, a rivalry whose roots reach back into Apollon's own early history: a crisis within AEL's ranks in the late 1950s saw a wave of players move to the younger club, helping fuel its rise to the top flight. Ever since, matches between the two sides have split the city in two and remain the biggest sporting occasion in the region.

Apollon's identity is inseparable from its passionate supporters, among whom the Gate 1 group is the most recognisable. From 1975 to 2022 the club shared the Tsirion Stadium with AEL and Aris Limassol; in December 2022 all three clubs moved into a new, UEFA Category 4 stadium built jointly for Limassol football. Despite sharing the ground with its local rivals, it is here that Apollon continues its tradition of regular appearances in European competition.
