CD Santa Clara are the only club from the Azores to have established a lasting presence in the top tier of Portuguese football, making them also the westernmost top-flight club anywhere in Europe. The club, based in Ponta Delgada on the island of São Miguel, was founded in 1921, though the official founding date is considered to be 12 May 1927, when the association's first board of directors was formally constituted. For decades Santa Clara remained a regional club, competing solely in Azorean competitions, while also facing unique logistical challenges - every away fixture on the Portuguese mainland required travel by plane, significantly raising the club's operating costs.
The breakthrough came in the 1999/2000 season, when Santa Clara reached the Primeira Liga for the first time in the club's history, though their debut ended in immediate relegation. The club has since returned to Portugal's top flight on several occasions, gradually establishing itself as a permanent fixture among the country's elite. The true peak of the club's achievements came in the 2024/25 season, when the Azoreans finished fifth in the table - the highest league position in the club's history - securing a historic qualification for the 2025/26 Conference League qualifying rounds. It marked the first return of European football to the Azores in two decades, this time with a far stronger and more established side than during the club's earlier, sporadic appearances in the Intertoto Cup.
Known as Os Açorianos (The Azoreans), the team play in red and white at Estádio de São Miguel in Ponta Delgada, the largest football stadium in the archipelago. The club's biggest local rivals are CD Operário, from neighbouring Lagoa on the same island, and for years Santa Clara's matches have given Azores residents a rare chance to watch top-level football live without having to travel to mainland Portugal.
