North Macedonia – football between history and new ambition

North Macedonia belongs to the group of smaller federations in European football. In the UEFA country ranking, it currently sits around the beginning of the fifth decade, between the Faroe Islands and Albania. Its advantage over the lower-ranked teams is small, so every progression to the next round of European competitions is important.

The country has several clubs capable of earning points, but none has yet established a position comparable to the best teams from Central Europe. The most important representatives are Shkëndija Tetovo, FC Shkupi, Struga Trim-Lum, Vardar Skopje and Sileks Kratovo.

Shkëndija – the new force

The highest-ranked North Macedonian club is Shkëndija Tetovo. The team from the western part of the country has been among the domestic elite for several years and regularly competes in the qualifying rounds of the Champions League and Europa League.

Shkëndija has achieved good results in Europa League qualifying, reaching the play-off round several times. The club has eliminated teams from Azerbaijan, Romania and Finland, establishing itself as the most consistent North Macedonian representative in recent years.

In the 2025/26 season, Shkëndija achieved a breakthrough by eliminating Romanian FCSB in Champions League qualifying. It was one of the biggest results in the club's history and only the second time that a team from North Macedonia had secured a place in the league phase of a major European competition.

Shkëndija also has particular social significance. Tetovo is home to a large Albanian community, and the club has become one of the most important symbols of the Albanian community in North Macedonia. Its matches therefore have a significance that extends beyond sport and into questions of identity.

Vardar and the previous generation

Vardar Skopje is the most decorated club in North Macedonia. The capital's team has won the country's most important domestic trophies and for many years was its leading representative in European competitions.

Vardar's biggest success in the modern era came in 2017. The club reached the Europa League group stage, becoming the first North Macedonian team to reach that stage of a European competition.

Vardar defeated Fenerbahçe on the way, producing a major upset. The Turkish club had a much larger budget, more famous players and considerably more European experience, but the North Macedonian side won both legs of the tie. The achievement remains one of the most important moments in the history of North Macedonian football.

In recent seasons, the club has not been as strong as during that European breakthrough. It nevertheless remains the country's most recognizable football brand and a symbol of Skopje.

Shkupi, Struga and a diverse league

FC Shkupi represents the capital and is closely associated with the Albanian community in Skopje. The club regularly competes for the domestic title and European qualification, while its matches have a particularly intense atmosphere due to local rivalries and social divisions.

Struga Trim-Lum comes from the town located on the shores of Lake Ohrid. The club quickly established itself among the domestic elite and began appearing regularly in European qualifying rounds. Its rise is an example of the decentralization of North Macedonian football, which is no longer based exclusively on clubs from Skopje and Tetovo.

Sileks Kratovo has a long tradition and is one of the country's most established clubs. Makedonija Gjorče Petrov, Rabotnički Skopje, Tikveš Kavadarci and AP Brera Strumica have also appeared in European competitions, although their campaigns have generally been shorter.

In the club ranking, Shkëndija is clearly ahead of the other representatives. Shkupi, Struga and Vardar follow, while the gap between the leading clubs and the rest remains significant.

North Macedonia and the question of the name

For many years, football commonly used the name Macedonia, although the country's official name is North Macedonia. The change was connected with the agreement with Greece that ended the long-running dispute over the country's name and the heritage of ancient Macedonia.

In 2019, the country officially adopted the name North Macedonia. The football federation and UEFA now use North Macedonia, and the national team competes under that name in official tournaments.

The dispute also affected sport. Greece had opposed its neighbour's use of the name Macedonia for years, arguing that it referred to the Greek region and the heritage of Alexander the Great. The political agreement opened North Macedonia's path to NATO and facilitated its relations with European institutions.

A national team led by Pandev

The greatest successes of North Macedonian football have come from the national team. In 2021, the country qualified for the European Championship for the first time. It was a historic achievement for a young state that had never previously appeared at the finals of a major tournament.

The leader of that team was Goran Pandev. The striker spent many years playing in Italy, including for Inter Milan, with whom he won the Champions League. Pandev was the captain, leading scorer and symbol of the national team.

North Macedonia also made history in World Cup qualifying by defeating Germany away from home. The victory over one of Europe's biggest national teams was a huge upset and demonstrated that the side could compete with opponents possessing far greater resources.

The squad also included Enis Bardhi, Elif Elmas and Ezgjan Alioski. Many North Macedonian players developed in Turkey, Italy, Spain, Germany and other stronger leagues, as the domestic competition could not provide the level required for their continued development.

Skopje, Tetovo and a Balkan atmosphere

The most important stadium in North Macedonia is the Toše Proeski National Arena in Skopje. The venue is named after the popular Macedonian singer who died tragically in a car accident. The stadium is home to the national team and the biggest clubs from the capital.

Another important venue is the stadium in Tetovo, where Shkëndija plays its home matches. Games involving the club are known for their intense atmosphere and strong support from the stands.

North Macedonian football has a distinctly Balkan character. Choreographies, flares, chanting and rivalry between supporter groups play an important role in the stands. Matches involving Vardar, Shkupi and Shkëndija can also carry regional and ethnic undertones, giving them significance beyond the league table.

North Macedonia in the UEFA ranking

North Macedonia sits around the beginning of the fifth decade of the UEFA country ranking. Its advantage over Albania is small, while it is less than one point behind the Faroe Islands. This shows how closely packed several similar federations are, with little margin for error.

Shkëndija, Shkupi and Struga have made the largest contributions to the country's coefficient. Vardar has a richer history, but during the period under review it earned fewer points than the new leader from Tetovo. Shkëndija's success in Champions League qualifying helped North Macedonia improve its current coefficient and break several years of stagnation.

The main problem remains the lack of consistency from several clubs at the same time. If Shkëndija, Shkupi, Struga and Vardar can progress through qualifying rounds more frequently, the country could move towards higher positions in the ranking.

North Macedonia has not won a European trophy, but it has Vardar's Europa League group-stage appearance and Shkëndija's historic European campaigns. The national team has played at the European Championship and defeated Germany, while the country continues to produce players capable of competing in stronger leagues.

It is a football culture built on ambition, Balkan character and a multicultural identity. The future of the country's ranking will depend on whether Shkëndija's success becomes the beginning of regular North Macedonian representation in Europe rather than a single breakthrough.
