On 30 May 1979, English club Nottingham Forest and Swedish side Malmö FF met in the European Cup Final at Munich's Olympiastadion—a matchup that few could have predicted before the season began. The match itself, however, proved to be a disappointment. Malmö, severely weakened by injuries, were without Bo Larsson and Roy Andersson, while captain Staffan Tapper broke a finger during the warm-up shortly before kick-off. Forced to adopt a highly defensive approach, the Swedish side offered little going forward. With neither club considered a traditional European powerhouse, the stadium was not filled to capacity.

The final is remembered for another reason as well. In February, manager Brian Clough signed Trevor Francis for Nottingham Forest in British football's first £1 million transfer. UEFA regulations prevented him from playing in the European Cup during the previous rounds, making the final his first opportunity to appear in the competition. Owing to injuries within the squad and Clough's team selection, Francis made his European debut in the starting lineup on the right wing.

The decision proved inspired. The £1 million signing scored the only goal of the match, giving Nottingham Forest a 1–0 victory and securing the club's first European Cup. The triumph also extended English clubs' dominance in the competition following Liverpool's victories in the previous two seasons.
