A dramatic late goal by Rudi Völler secured AS Roma's place in the 1991 UEFA Cup final after a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Brøndby IF at Stadio Olimpico on 24 April 1991. The tie had been deadlocked at 0–0 following the first leg in Denmark, making every goal crucial. Ruggiero Rizzitelli opened the scoring for the Italians in the 33rd minute, capitalising on a defensive error by the visitors.

Brøndby found an unexpected equaliser in the 62nd minute when Stefano Nela inadvertently directed the ball into his own net. For the next 26 minutes, the 1–1 scoreline favoured the Danish side on aggregate, until Völler's 88th-minute strike restored Roma's lead and sealed a 2–1 aggregate victory. The goal sparked wild celebrations among the 58,042 spectators in attendance.

The match was officiated by Spanish referee Emilio Soriano Aladrén. This victory marked AS Roma's third appearance in a European final, although they would ultimately lose the final to Inter Milan (0–2, 1–0).
