Bologna FC Bologna FC 1909 is one of the most historic and decorated football clubs in Italy. Founded on 3 October 1909 in the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region, the club became one of the dominant forces in Italian football during the first half of the 20th century, winning seven Serie A titles (1924–25, 1928–29, 1935–36, 1936–37, 1938–39, 1940–41, and 1963–64). In the 1930s, driven by a string of championship-winning seasons under coaches Hermann Felsner and Árpád Weisz and stars such as Angelo Schiavio, a 1934 World Cup winner, the team earned the legendary nickname "lo squadrone che tremare il mondo fa" — the team that makes the world tremble.
Known as I Rossoblù (The Red and Blues), Bologna has built its identity from the very beginning around a deep connection with the city and a rich footballing tradition. Since 1927, the club has played its home matches at the historic Stadio Renato Dall'Ara, originally named Stadio Littoriale and renamed in 1983 in honour of the club's long-serving president.
After years of ups and downs — including relegations as low as Serie C in the 1990s — Bologna enjoyed a remarkable revival in the 21st century. It culminated in a return to European competition after six decades: in the 2023/24 season, the team led by Thiago Motta finished fifth in Serie A, securing its first Champions League qualification since 1964. A year later, now under Vincenzo Italiano, Bologna won its third Coppa Italia, defeating AC Milan in the final — the club's first national title in 51 years.
Among the greatest players to have worn the Rossoblù jersey are also Giacomo Bulgarelli, the club's all-time appearance record holder, and Roberto Baggio, who, despite spending just one season in Bologna, remains one of the club's symbols thanks to his earlier Ballon d'Or triumph. Today's Bologna, blending pride in its rich past with the ambitions of a renewed squad, continues to prove it belongs among the leading clubs of Italian football.
