In domestic football, Queens Park Rangers achieved its highest-ever league finish during the 1975–76 season, finishing as First Division runners-up under manager Dave Sexton, just one point behind champion Liverpool FC. In European competitions, Queens Park Rangers made a notable mark in the UEFA Cup. During the 1976–77 campaign, QPR reached the quarter-finals before being eliminated on penalties by AEK Athens. In the 1984–85 UEFA Cup, the club played one of the most famous ties in its history against Partizan Belgrade, winning 6–2 at home before suffering a 4–0 away defeat to exit on the away goals rule.
