Exactly one year after their remarkable triumph in Munich, Brian Clough's side had the opportunity to repeat the feat. On 28 May 1980, at the legendary Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, English club Nottingham Forest faced West German champions Hamburger SV in the European Cup Final.

In front of a crowd of more than 51,000 spectators, the match was tense from the opening whistle. The decisive moment came in the 21st minute when John Robertson unleashed a shot that completely caught Hamburger SV goalkeeper Rudi Kargus off guard. The ball found the back of the net, giving Forest a 1–0 lead.

From that point on, the English side demonstrated exactly what Clough's teams had become famous for: disciplined, exceptionally well-organized, and rock-solid defending. Hamburger SV threw everything forward in search of an equalizer, but Nottingham's defense proved impenetrable throughout the evening. The score remained unchanged, allowing Nottingham Forest to successfully defend its European Cup title and become the champions of Europe for the second consecutive year.
