SPAL (Società Polisportiva Ars et Labor) stands as one of the most historical football institutions in Northern Italy. Founded in 1907 in Ferrara by Salesian priest Paolo Mazzodi as a cultural and sports association, the club established its identity around its signature white-and-light-blue vertical striped shirts. The team hosts its home matches at the historic Stadio Paolo Mazza, named in honor of the visionay president who guided the club through its most successful era.

The club's highest achievement in national league competition came in the 1921–22 season, when they finished as runners-up in the CCI Top Championship behind Pro Vercelli. The golden era for SPAL arrived during the 1950s and 1960s under the presidency of Paolo Mazza. During this period, the club maintained a consistent presence in Serie A for nearly two decades, achieving a top-five league finish in the 1959–60 season. Another major milestone occurred in 1962, when the team reached the Coppa Italia final against Napoli.

Over the decades, the club served as a launching pad for notable figures in Italian football. Legendary manager and former midfielder Fabio Capello began his professional career at SPAL, while other key historic figures included Argentine forward Oscar Massei—the club's all-time top scorer in Serie A—as well as national team forward Egisto Pandolfini and defender Armando Picchi, who later captained Inter Milan.

Following decades in the lower divisions and financial restructurings, the club achieved a remarkable resurgence under head coach Leonardo Semplici, earning back-to-back promotions from Serie C to Serie A between 2016 and 2017. Returning to the top flight after a 49-year absence re-established SPAL as an enduring symbol of football heritage in the Emilia-Romagna region.
