The New Saints - Legia Warsaw, 17.07.2013
A July evening in 2013 at the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham was supposed to be a mere formality and a smooth entry into European competition for a star-studded Legia Warszawa. The reigning Polish champions, managed by Jan Urban, arrived in the British Isles with a clear plan – to secure a high-scoring victory against the Welsh champions, The New Saints FC, and wrap up the tie in the first leg of the Champions League second qualifying round. However, footballing reality brutally tested the favorites' pre-match assumptions, and the ambitious Welshmen proved that they had no intention of bowing down to anyone on their home turf.
The match began with an absolute shock for the Polish fans. Although Legia attempted to control the game from the opening whistle, it was the hosts who executed a lethal play in the 11th minute. Following a cross from a corner kick and a headed flick-on, Michael Wilde rose highest in the penalty area, ruthlessly burying the ball into the net past a helpless Dušan Kuciak. The sensational 1:0 lead for TNS held until half-time. The Welsh side played with immense aggression, defended intelligently, and mercilessly exposed a lack of chemistry and glaring inefficiency within the Warsaw team, who headed into the break in dismal spirits.
It took some harsh words in the dressing room and the substitution of Miroslav Radović to transform the side from Łazienkowska Street in the second half. Michał Kucharczyk provided the equalizer in the 47th minute after a precise pass from Jakub Kosecki. Just a few minutes later, the newly introduced Radović showcased his technical class, firing a precise shot to put Legia ahead. The final score of 3:1 for the visitors was sealed late on by Marek Saganowski. Although the ultimate result looked safe for the favorites, media outlets in Poland universally labeled the first 45 minutes as "embarrassing." Meanwhile, despite the defeat, the TNS players left the pitch with their heads held high, once again proving their incredible character against established European names.
