Siarka Tarnobrzeg is one of the few Polish football clubs whose name comes directly from a mineral resource - yellow sulphur, on whose extraction the entire city was built and around which Tarnobrzeg's sporting life revolved for decades. The club's roots, however, reach back further than its present name - as early as 1919, the city was home to Klub Sportowy Dzikovia, which in the post-war years also operated under the names Sparta and Ogniwo. The turning point came with the discovery of rich sulphur deposits near Tarnobrzeg and the establishment in 1954 of the state enterprise Kopalnie i Zakłady Przetwórcze Siarki 'Siarkopol', which three years later, in 1957, took the older club under its patronage, giving it a new name, colours and organisational structure - thus creating today's Siarka, whose first coach was Stanisław Szymański, who guided the team to promotion from Class B to Class A.

The growth of sulphur mining went hand in hand with the club's sporting development, which from the outset could boast nationally successful table tennis, volleyball and basketball sections, though the footballers climbed the league hierarchy more gradually. In 1972 the Green-Black-and-Yellows appointed Orest Lenczyk, then only 32 years old, as coach, guiding the Tarnobrzeg side to promotion to the II liga - Siarka thus marked one of the first chapters in a career that would later take Lenczyk to the helm of the Poland national team. In 1979, the club's junior side reached the national championship final, finishing runners-up, though that same year the senior team was relegated from the II liga to the III liga. The club's historic, first-ever promotion to the Ekstraklasa came only in the 1991-92 season, secured under coach Janusz Gałek.

Siarka spent a total of three seasons at the top level - 1992-93, 1993-94 and 1995-96 - playing 102 matches and recording its best finish, eleventh place, in its debut season. During that period the club fielded players who went on to represent Poland's youth national teams, and Siarka product Andrzej Kobylański won a silver medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. After its final relegation from the Ekstraklasa in 1996, the club - its finances badly weakened by the troubles of its parent sulphur mine - slid down through the lower divisions, where it remains today, having spent years shuttling between the second and third tiers. Siarka plays its home matches at the Edward Mikusiński Municipal Stadium in Tarnobrzeg, with Stal Stalowa Wola remaining its fiercest regional derby rival.
