OFK Petrovac OFK Petrovac is a club from the small coastal town of Petrovac whose history is defined above all by one remarkable European campaign. The club was founded in 1969 as FK Nafta and later adopted the name OFK Petrovac. For many years, it competed mainly in the lower levels of Yugoslav and subsequently Montenegrin football. A major turning point came after Montenegro became independent, when Petrovac was among the clubs taking part in the inaugural season of the country's top division in 2006/07. Since then, it has established itself as one of the clubs with the longest continuous presence in the Montenegrin top flight.
The most important moment in OFK Petrovac's domestic history came in the 2008/09 season. The team finished sixth in the league, but its much more significant achievement came in the Montenegrin Cup. In the final on 13 May 2009, Petrovac faced Lovćen. The match remained goalless through 90 minutes and almost the entire extra time. In the 118th minute, Luka Rotković struck from around 25 metres to give Petrovac a 1–0 victory. It remains the club's only Montenegrin Cup triumph.
The cup victory gave the small club an opportunity to enter European competition. The 2009/10 UEFA Europa League campaign remains the defining international chapter in the history of OFK Petrovac. In the second qualifying round, the opponent was Anorthosis Famagusta, who had reached the Champions League group stage the previous season. Anorthosis won the first leg in Cyprus 2–1, but Petrovac responded with a 2–1 victory after extra time in the return match. Luka Rotković again proved decisive, scoring in the 102nd minute. Petrovac won the tie 4–3 on aggregate and eliminated a considerably more experienced opponent. UEFA described the achievement as one of the great results in Montenegrin club football.
The third qualifying round brought an even stronger opponent. Petrovac were drawn against Sturm Graz. The first leg in Montenegro ended in a 2–1 defeat, while Sturm won the return match 5–0. Petrovac's first European campaign therefore ended in the third qualifying round. UEFA records four matches for the club in that Europa League edition: one win and three defeats.
The 2009 cup remains the greatest trophy in the club's history. OFK Petrovac have never won the Montenegrin championship, and for many years their league finishes were generally in the middle of the table. The club's consistency at the highest domestic level is nevertheless notable. In 2024/25, Petrovac achieved one of the best league results in its history by finishing second. Over 36 matches, the team collected 60 points, recording 17 wins, nine draws and 10 defeats. Only Budućnost Podgorica finished higher, winning the championship with 84 points.
Second place should have brought another European campaign, but Petrovac were denied a place in the UEFA Conference League in 2025 for formal reasons. The 2024/25 result nevertheless confirmed that a club from a small coastal town could compete for the highest positions in Montenegrin football.
The home of OFK Petrovac is Stadion Mitar Mićo Goliš, formerly known as Stadion pod Malim brdom. The ground was built in 1969, the same year the club was founded. Following several renovations, most recently in 2013, it was brought up to UEFA standards and now has a capacity of 1,630. Its location is one of the distinctive features of the club: the stadium stands only a few hundred metres from the Adriatic coast. In 2022, it was named after Mitar Mićo Goliš, a footballer, captain and club activist associated with Petrovac.
The traditional colours of OFK Petrovac are primarily sky blue and white, reflected in the club's nickname “Nebesko plavi”, meaning “The Sky-Blues”. The modest size of the town and stadium contrasts with the club's most famous achievement: eliminating a former Champions League group-stage participant on its European debut. The tie against Anorthosis remains the clearest expression of Petrovac's identity — a club without a large domestic trophy haul that nevertheless took full advantage of a rare opportunity on the international stage.
The history of OFK Petrovac is therefore not one of domination in Montenegro. It is the story of a small-town club that has built its identity around a long presence in the top division, one major domestic trophy and, above all, a memorable European adventure in 2009. The victory over Anorthosis remains the achievement that permanently placed Petrovac among the notable stories of Montenegrin football in European competition.
