Miedź LegnicaMiedź Legnica are a club that turned a single day of glory into half a century of legend. Founded on 14 September 1971 as the successor to the multi-section club MZKS Legnica, financed by local employers – the Legnica copper works, Legmet and Elpena – the club took its colours from these three founding sections: blue, green and red, echoing their crests rather than the colour of copper the club's name might suggest.
Miedzianka worked for more than two decades to achieve the greatest success in its history. In the 1991/1992 season, while playing in the second tier, the Legnica side went through the entire Polish Cup ladder, eliminating opponents including Stal Mielec and Olimpia Poznań along the way. In the final at the Polish Army Stadium in Warsaw, Miedź faced four-time Polish champions Górnik Zabrze. In a dramatic match, Piotr Jegor put Górnik ahead before Dariusz Baziuk equalised in the 82nd minute, sending the game to a 1:1 draw. The trophy was decided on penalties, which Miedź won 4:3 – the first time since 1983 that the Polish Cup had gone to a club outside the top flight.
The victory opened the door to the Cup Winners' Cup, where Miedź met AS Monaco, managed by Arsène Wenger and featuring Jürgen Klinsmann and Youri Djorkaeff, in the round of 32. The Legnica side lost 0:1 at home before holding Monaco to a goalless draw in the away leg, going out with heads held high. Supporters had to wait until 2018 for the club's next historic moment, when Miedź were promoted to the Ekstraklasa for the first time. The team plays at the White Eagle Municipal Stadium in Legnica, and its crest features a lion referencing the city's tradition.
