Velež MostarFK Velež Mostar is one of the clubs with the most distinctive histories in Bosnian and Herzegovinian football. It was founded on 26 June 1922 in Mostar as a club associated with the city's working-class community. From the beginning, it developed a strong identity, with red and white as its traditional colours. The nickname “Rođeni” (“The Born Ones”) has become one of the most recognisable elements of the club's culture.
Velež enjoyed its greatest sporting period during the 1970s and 1980s, when it was one of the leading sides in the Yugoslav top flight. It finished second in 1972/73, 1973/74 and 1986/87, although it never won the Yugoslav championship. Its greatest domestic successes came in the cup. Velež won the Yugoslav Cup twice, in 1980/81 and 1985/86, becoming the first club from Bosnia and Herzegovina to lift the trophy.
The club also has a notable European history. In the 1974/75 season, Velež reached the UEFA Cup quarter-finals, one of the most significant achievements by a Bosnian club in European competition. It also appeared regularly in European tournaments in other periods, playing in the UEFA Cup in 1973/74, 1974/75, 1987/88 and 1988/89. In the latter campaign, it reached the third round.
Several players who later became important figures for Yugoslavia and European football were closely associated with Velež. One of the most prominent was Dušan Bajević, a Velež youth product and long-serving striker who represented Yugoslavia before later achieving major success as a coach. Vahid Halilhodžić was another important player associated with the club. The generation produced in Mostar helped establish Velež's reputation as a club capable of developing talented footballers.
The war in Bosnia and Herzegovina had profound consequences for the club. Following the destruction caused by the conflict, Velež was forced to leave its stadium at Bijeli Brijeg and moved to Vrapčići, on the northern outskirts of Mostar. The Rođeni Stadium, opened on 25 November 1995, was subsequently developed there. With a capacity of around 7,000, it remains the club's home and has become a symbol of its post-war rebuilding.
After the establishment of the unified Bosnian and Herzegovinian league, Velež spent years attempting to regain the position it had held during the Yugoslav era. A major milestone came with the Bosnian Cup triumph in 2022. In the final in Zenica, Velež drew 0–0 with FK Sarajevo after 90 minutes before winning the penalty shoot-out. It was the first Bosnian Cup title in the club's history.
The club's modern European story was highlighted by the 2021/22 season. In the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying rounds, Velež eliminated Greek side AEK Athens after a 2–2 draw after extra time and a 3–2 victory on penalties. In the next round, the Bosnian side drew 1–1 away to IF Elfsborg, but lost the return leg 1–4 and were eliminated. Reaching the third qualifying round nevertheless represented one of the most significant European moments of the club's post-war history.
The history of FK Velež Mostar therefore combines a tradition dating back to 1922 with the legacy of one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's most successful clubs of the Yugoslav era. Two Yugoslav Cups, three Yugoslav runners-up finishes, a UEFA Cup quarter-final and a later Bosnian Cup triumph form a record that distinguishes Velež in the country's football landscape. The club remains closely connected to Mostar, while the Rođeni Stadium and its red-and-white colours are important symbols of its identity.
