On 7 May 1986, Steaua București defeated FC Barcelona 2–0 on penalties after a 0–0 draw following extra time in the European Cup final at Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán in Seville. Goalkeeper Helmuth Duckadam saved all four of Barcelona's penalties, a record in European competitions that still stands. Marius Lăcătuș and Gavril Balint scored for Steaua. The match was attended by 70,000 spectators and refereed by Frenchman Michel Vautrot. This was Steaua's first and only European Cup triumph to date.
