Montpellier Hérault Sport Club have won one French league title, in the 2011/12 season. The achievement stood out because the Montpellier side finished three points ahead of Paris Saint-Germain, while their leading scorer, Olivier Giroud, netted 21 times and shared the Ligue 1 Golden Boot with Nenê. The title remains the greatest achievement in the history of the modern MHSC and one of the most unexpected outcomes in French football of that period.
The club’s history calls for a distinction between its early roots and the formation of the present organisation. Football traditions in Montpellier date back to 1919, while the current club was established in 1974. UEFA gives that year as the foundation date of Montpellier Hérault SC, also known as MHSC or La Paillade—the latter nickname refers to a district of the city.
The club’s connection to the city is reflected in both its name and its identity. Montpellier HSC play their home matches at Stade de la Mosson. The team’s distinctive colours are orange and navy, which became especially recognisable during the title-winning 2011/12 campaign. Club owner Louis Nicollin promised to give himself a hairstyle in the club colours if the team won the title, and kept his word after the championship was secured.
Montpellier have won the Coupe de France twice, in 1990 and 2012, as well as one French league title. The 1990 cup triumph was a major achievement for a side that included Colombian midfielder Carlos Valderrama. He made 91 appearances for the club and scored five goals. Cameroonian forward Roger Milla also left his mark at Montpellier, scoring 20 goals in 62 appearances for the team in France’s top division.
The year 1999 holds a special place in Montpellier’s European record. The club won the UEFA Intertoto Cup, beating Hamburger SV in the final after two 1–1 draws and a 3–0 victory in the penalty shoot-out. The triumph earned Montpellier a place in the UEFA Cup. Memorable results in that campaign included emphatic wins over Qarabağ FK: 3–0 away and 6–0 at home.
The club’s most prestigious European test came in the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League group stage, following its French title. Montpellier faced Arsenal, Schalke 04 and Olympiacos. At home, they beat Olympiacos 1–0, then won the return match in Piraeus 3–1. It was a notable European chapter in a season that began with the club’s historic domestic triumph.
Montpellier HSC’s story brings together local continuity dating back to the early twentieth century and the successes of the present club, whose history began in 1974. The 2012 championship remains the team’s only league title, but its honours also include two domestic cups and the Intertoto Cup. This combination of regional identity, an unexpected league triumph and European campaigns forms the core of Montpellier’s football history.
