Werder Bremen SV Werder Bremen is one of northern Germany's most prominent football institutions. Founded on 4 February 1899 by a group of local students, the club derived its name from the regional word 'Werder', meaning a river peninsula, referencing its original training grounds alongside the Weser River. The team traditionally plays in green and white kit.
Since 1909, the club's home ground has been the Weserstadion, uniquely positioned directly on the banks of the Weser River. In domestic football, Werder Bremen has won 4 German championships (1965, 1988, 1993, and 2004) and 6 DFB-Pokal titles. The most successful eras in the club's history occurred under long-serving managers Otto Rehhagel and Thomas Schaaf, the latter leading the club to a historic domestic double in the 2003–04 season. Iconic figures who have starred for the club include all-time foreign goalscorer Claudio Pizarro, German World Cup winners Rudi Völler and Miroslav Klose, and Brazilian playmaker Diego.
The club's greatest international triumph came in the 1991–92 European Cup Winners' Cup, when Werder Bremen defeated AS Monaco 2–0 in the final in Lisbon. The club also reached the final of the 2008–09 UEFA Cup, finishing as runners-up to Shakhtar Donetsk.
