Lech and Legia: The classic of Polish football

The origins of the rivalry

The first league meeting between the two clubs took place in 1948. ZKK Poznań, Lech's predecessor, beat Legia 5-4. Since then the two sides have met so often that Lech has played more matches against Legia than against any other opponent, although it is the capital club that holds the better record. On 26 April 2026 Lech won 4-0, its biggest league victory over Legia ever. The match was watched by 40,810 spectators.

The Polish Cup finals

The two clubs have met in the final four times:

  • 1980: Legia won 5-0. One of the goals was scored by Mirosław Okoński, who was already playing for the Warsaw club.
  • 2004: the final was played over two legs. Lech won 2-0 at home and lost 0-1 away in Warsaw, which was enough to lift the trophy. It was its fourth triumph in the competition and its first in 16 years.
  • 2011: in Bydgoszcz the match ended 1-1 after extra time, and Legia prevailed 5-4 on penalties.
  • 2015: at the National Stadium Legia won 2-1. The Poznań side took the lead through an own goal by Jodłowiec, but Saganowski scored the winner for Legia.

In direct finals Legia therefore comes out ahead, having won three of the four meetings. The Warsaw club is also the record holder in terms of trophies: it has played in 27 finals and won 21 of them. Lech has five Polish Cups to its name.

The Legia decade (2010-2019)

Between 2010 and 2019, Legia set the pace in Polish football. In that time it won five league titles (2013, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018) and six Polish Cups (2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2018). It also played regularly in European competitions, and in the 2016/17 season it reached the group stage of the Champions League.

Over the same period Lech won the league only once, in 2015, and more often than not came out second best in direct clashes for trophies, as the finals of 2011 and 2015 show. For Poznań fans it was a decade of frustration. Warsaw built up a financial and sporting advantage, while Lech too often remained in the role of challenger.

The Lech era

With the new decade the balance of power began to shift. Legia did still win the league in 2019/20 and 2020/21, but after that the initiative passed to Lech. In 2021/22, the club's centenary season, Lech won its eighth championship. It added two more in 2025 and 2026. In May 2026 the Poznań side became Polish champions for the second year in a row, securing the title with one round to spare. It was their tenth title in history. Legia finished that season only sixth.

The symbol of this change is the aforementioned 4-0 from April 2026, won at a crucial moment of the title race. It is worth keeping some perspective, however. Legia is still the record champion, with 15 titles. In this decade Lech has won the league three times and Legia twice, so this is a clear edge rather than dominance on the scale that Legia enjoyed in the previous decade. That may yet change, as the decade is still young.

Transfers that hurt

A move from Poznań to Warsaw has always caused a scandal in Greater Poland and stirred strong emotions among the fans. A few examples:

  • Mirosław Okoński and Jarosław Araszkiewicz went to Legia out of necessity. Araszkiewicz recalled that the choice he faced was a transfer or military service. Even so, the fans resented it, and before the 1980 final Okoński was greeted with abusive chants.
  • Jerzy Podbrożny moved to Legia directly from Lech. Fans splashed his car with red paint, and a message appeared on a wall: "God forgives, the fans never."
  • Maciej Murawski left in 1998, but in his case the situation was different. The transfer money was meant to help pay the overdue wages of the Poznań players, and when he returned for a match against Lech, the fans chanted his name.
  • Paweł Kaczorowski had it harder on the other side. He spent only half a year in Warsaw and never won over the Legia fans, because he had earlier declared his dislike of the club.
  • Bartosz Bereszyński was called "Judas" by the fans.
  • Kasper Hämäläinen signed for Legia ahead of time. His car was vandalised, and on a banner by the training ground Lech fans insulted him with a vulgar epithet.

There are two lessons here. Fans forgive transfers forced by circumstances, such as military service or financial trouble. What they do not forgive are moves that look like a voluntary choice to join the rival.

The capital versus the capital of Greater Poland

The rivalry also has a historical backdrop. Poznań is associated with the Greater Poland Uprising and Paderewski, while Legia, although it has not been an army club for over a quarter of a century, is still sometimes seen as one. Greater Poland and Mazovia often argue over the title of the "true" football capital of Poland. Matches between the two clubs are sometimes called the "Derby of Poland". In 2015 Lech fans unveiled a huge "Pyrlandia" banner at the National Stadium and travelled to the capital on eight trains.

The fans

Lech has a very strong fan base, not only regional but nationwide. In the 2024/25 season the average attendance at the stadium in Poznań was 28,947, the highest in the league for many years and ahead of Legia. Legia, for its part, as the capital club, has long had a broad, nationwide following. When these two teams meet, the stadiums are packed to the rafters.

Conclusion

Lech and Legia are two clubs with a rich history, large fan bases and a mutual animosity fuelled by cup finals, transfers and the dispute over primacy in Polish football. Legia had its decade in 2010-2019, and since 2020 the initiative has increasingly passed to Lech. The head-to-head record is still more favourable to Warsaw, but the record 4-0 of a few months ago shows that new chapters of this story are still being written.
