Wisła Płock Wisła Płock, popularly known as the Nafciarze (Oilers), trace their tradition back to Elektryczność Płock, founded in 1947. The club changed its name several times over the following years — briefly as Ogniwo and Sparta Płock — before settling on Wisła Płock after 1963, when the Masovian Refining and Petrochemical Works became the club's patron. The Nafciarze nickname still reflects the club's strong ties to Płock's oil refinery, today part of the Orlen group.
The greatest success in the club's history came in 2006. Wisła, featuring striker Ireneusz Jeleń, won the Polish Cup for the first time, defeating Zagłębie Lubin over two legs in the final. Weeks later, without Jeleń, who had just been transferred to France, the team caused a sensation by beating Polish champions Legia Warszawa 2:1 to win the Polish Super Cup, claiming a second trophy in the same year. Those two triumphs opened the door to European competition, and Wisła took part in UEFA Cup qualifying rounds, facing sides such as Grasshoppers Zurich and Chornomorets Odesa.
The team plays in blue-white-blue colours at Kazimierz Górski Stadium on Łukasiewicza Street in Płock. The club has long emphasised developing its own youth talent, and players who came through its ranks, including Jeleń and Marcin Wasilewski, have gone on to represent the Polish national team. Since 2008, the city of Płock has owned 100 percent of the club's shares, providing organisational stability through seasons that have often swung between the Ekstraklasa and the divisions below it.
