The 1981–82 European Cup final between Aston Villa and Bayern München on 26 May 1982 at De Kuip in Rotterdam ended in a 1–0 victory for the English side. It was a historic triumph for the Birmingham club, winning their first and, to date, only European Cup. The match was attended by approximately 46,000 spectators and officiated by French referee Georges Konrath.

The first half was a tactical affair with neither side gaining a clear advantage. Aston Villa, managed by interim boss Tony Barton, adopted a defensive approach, looking to counter-attack. Bayern München, featuring stars like Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Dieter Hoeness, controlled possession but struggled to break down the compact English defence. The best chance of the half fell to Gary Shaw, but his shot was blocked by the defenders.

The decisive moment came in the 67th minute. Tony Morley, after a solo run in which he beat Hans Weiner, passed the ball along the goal line to Peter Withe. The striker, from close range and somewhat fortuitously, directed the ball into the net off the post. Goalkeeper Sepp Maier could not react in time. This goal proved to be the only one of the match.

In the closing stages, Bayern attempted to equalise, and in the 89th minute Dieter Hoeness found the net, but the goal was ruled offside. Aston Villa held on to their lead until the final whistle, with goalkeeper Nigel Spink, who had replaced the injured Jimmy Rimmer in the 9th minute, making several crucial saves. After the match, Peter Withe was named man of the match, and the English side joined the ranks of European champions, continuing the streak of English clubs in the European Cup.
