Betis – Barcelona: uneven encounters with flashes of upset

Matches between Real Betis and FC Barcelona are rarely billed as a great clásico, but for decades they have drawn the attention of fans. The Seville-based club have one Spanish league title to their name (1934/35), while the Blaugrana have won numerous titles. Even so, in Seville people always hope for something more than a routine defeat against the favourite.

Balance of power

The head-to-head record clearly favours Barcelona. The Catalans have won far more often than Betis across all competitions, and over the last two decades their advantage in La Liga has widened further. There have been plenty of draws, which shows that Betis can give Barça a difficult game, especially at home at the Benito Villamarín.

History and great nights

Barcelona have thrashed Betis by wide margins on several occasions, both at Camp Nou and in Seville. Betis, however, have had their moments of glory. In 1998 they won at Camp Nou, and in 2002 they beat Barça at home without conceding a goal. Particularly memorable was the victory in December 2021, when the Seville-based side won at Camp Nou once again. In the 2024/25 season both league games ended in draws. It is also worth mentioning the 1997 Copa del Rey final, which Barcelona won after extra time.

Players and managers from both sides

Many players link the two teams. Marc Bartra is a product of the Barcelona academy and later became an important defender for Betis. Junior Firpo went the opposite way, moving from Seville to Camp Nou in 2019. A similar path was followed by Emerson Royal, who joined Betis as part of a complex transfer arrangement before Barcelona brought him to the club in 2021. Juan Miranda, Carles Aleñá and Vitor Roque also played in Seville on loan from Barça, and winger Cristian Tello played for both clubs. Another link between the two clubs is manager Quique Setién, who coached Betis from 2017 to 2019 and took charge of Barcelona in 2020.

Summary

This rivalry is not an even one, but it has its charm. Betis play the role of the eternal challenger: they cannot always win, but they often know how to cause problems. Barcelona take these matches seriously, knowing that it is easy to slip up in Seville. In addition, the numerous transfers and loans mean that the two clubs know each other particularly well and understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses.
