Georgia – football between the Caucasus and Europe

Georgia is one of the most interesting countries in European football. It lies in the Caucasus, between the Black Sea, Russia, Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan. Geographically, it sits on the border between Europe and Asia, but in football it has been part of UEFA for decades.

In the UEFA national association ranking, Georgia is around 50th place. It is close to Gibraltar, Estonia, Northern Ireland and Luxembourg. Differences in this part of the table are small, so a single successful season can move the federation up several places.

Georgia has considerably greater sporting potential than its ranking position suggests. The country has produced many talented players, while its national team achieved the biggest success in its history in recent years.

Dinamo Tbilisi – a club with a European trophy

The most important Georgian club remains Dinamo Tbilisi. The capital club was one of the strongest teams in Soviet football and, even before Georgia gained independence, competed against some of Europe's biggest clubs.

Dinamo's greatest success came in 1981. The Georgian club won the European Cup Winners' Cup, defeating Carl Zeiss Jena in the final. It was the first European trophy won by a club from Georgia and one of the most important achievements by a team from the former Soviet Union.

Dinamo reached the final after victories over strong opponents, including West Ham United. The London club was eliminated in an impressive two-legged tie, and the Georgians' success attracted considerable attention throughout the Soviet Union.

The Tbilisi side was known for its technical style, creativity and attacking courage. At a time when Soviet football was often associated primarily with tactical discipline and physical preparation, Dinamo stood out for its freedom and southern temperament.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the club lost some of its former status. It remains, however, the most successful Georgian football brand and an important reference point for the country's entire football system.

New clubs on the European stage

Today, Georgia's European points are collected by clubs including Dinamo Batumi, FC Dila Gori, Iberia 1999 Tbilisi, Torpedo Kutaisi and Dinamo Tbilisi. None has yet achieved the consistency of the strongest clubs from Central Europe, but several teams have managed to progress through qualifying rounds.

Dinamo Batumi has become one of the country's most important clubs in recent years. The team from the Black Sea coast has developed both sporting and organizationally, while its European appearances have increased the importance of western Georgia on the country's football map.

FC Dila Gori represents a city in central Georgia. The club does not have the same history as Dinamo Tbilisi, but it regularly appears in European qualifying rounds and has collected valuable points for the federation.

Iberia 1999 Tbilisi is a younger brand that stands out for its work with players and its organizational ambitions. The club represents a new generation of Georgian teams attempting to build their own position outside Dinamo's historical shadow.

Torpedo Kutaisi, meanwhile, has strong regional traditions. Kutaisi is one of Georgia's most important cities, and the club enjoys significant support from the local community. For Torpedo, European football is not only a sporting competition but also a way of promoting the entire region.

Georgia in the UEFA ranking

Georgia remains in the lower part of the UEFA national association ranking, but in recent seasons it has stayed close to Northern Ireland, Luxembourg and Gibraltar. This is not yet a level that allows regular competition with mid-ranking European leagues, but the country has several clubs capable of collecting points in qualifying rounds.

The highest-ranked Georgian clubs remain well behind teams from Europe's leading leagues. Dinamo Batumi and Dila Gori have accumulated records comparable to those of Iberia 1999 and Dinamo Tbilisi, showing that there is currently no clear dominant club in Georgia.

This distinguishes modern Georgia from many small federations where one club accounts for a large majority of the country's points. Georgia nevertheless needs several teams to improve their results simultaneously. If Dinamo Batumi, Dila Gori, Iberia and Torpedo progress through qualifying rounds more frequently, the country could move towards higher positions.

A national team led by Kvaratskhelia

The biggest chapter in the modern history of Georgian football has been written by the national team. In 2024, Georgia qualified for the European Championship finals for the first time. They secured their place through the play-offs, defeating Greece on penalties.

At the tournament in Germany, Georgia progressed from the group stage and reached the round of 16. In the group stage, they defeated Portugal, while Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored one of the most important goals in the history of Georgian football. It was one of the greatest achievements by a debutant in the history of the European Championship.

Kvaratskhelia became the symbol of a new generation. The Napoli winger impressed with his dribbling, courage and unpredictability. Together with goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, striker Georges Mikautadze and other players, he helped create a team that did not enter the tournament merely to make up the numbers.

The Caucasian character of Georgian football

Georgian football is distinguished by technical ability, individual skill and the important role of creative players. For decades, the country has valued footballers capable of carrying the ball, taking opponents on one-on-one and taking risks.

During the Soviet era, Dinamo Tbilisi was known as a team that played more attractively and expressively than many sides from the northern parts of the Soviet Union. To some extent, this tradition has survived to this day. Georgian players often stand out for their technical confidence, even when their clubs have limited budgets.

The diaspora also contributes to the development of football. Many Georgians live and work in Europe, and young players can move earlier to academies in Italy, France, Germany or other countries. As a result, the national team benefits from players who develop in stronger training environments.

Tbilisi and Georgia's stadiums

The most important venue in Georgian football is Boris Paichadze Stadium in Tbilisi. The arena is named after the legendary Georgian footballer and is home to both the national team and Dinamo Tbilisi.

The stadium is located in the capital, which is by far the country's most important sporting centre. Tbilisi has the largest concentration of clubs, supporters, academies and football institutions. National team matches have a particularly strong atmosphere, as football is closely connected with national pride.

Georgia also has stadiums in Batumi, Kutaisi, Gori and other cities. These venues are generally smaller than the major arenas of Western Europe, but they allow clubs to maintain strong links with their local communities.

An interesting feature is the contrast between the stadiums and the country's landscape. Georgian football grounds are located in cities surrounded by mountains, vineyards, valleys and the Black Sea coast. Travelling to a match can therefore mean passing through remarkably diverse regions.

Georgia – a country at a sporting turning point

Georgia has not won a modern European club competition, but Dinamo Tbilisi has a European Cup Winners' Cup to its name. That triumph remains the country's most important club achievement and a reminder of the golden era of Georgian football.

Today, however, the national team generates greater excitement. Qualification for the European Championship and the victory over Portugal showed that Georgia can compete with some of Europe's strongest sides even though its domestic league remains small.

The biggest challenge is retaining talent and translating individual quality into stronger club results. Kvaratskhelia, Mamardashvili and Mikautadze have demonstrated that Georgia can produce players of the highest level. A similar development now needs to take place at club level.

Georgia therefore remains a country with considerable footballing potential, but with much of that potential still untapped. The historic triumph of Dinamo Tbilisi, the national team's success at Euro 2024, and the development of Dinamo Batumi, Dila Gori and Iberia 1999 provide a foundation for the continued growth of Georgian football.
