Polissya Zhytomyr is a Ukrainian football club whose roots go back to 1959, when Avanhard Zhytomyr was formed as the city's first Soviet-era "team of masters." A year later the team came under the "Spartak" sports society and took the name Polissya, which over the following decades changed repeatedly (Avtomobilist, Spartak, Khimik) before being restored.

The most memorable moment of the club's Soviet history came in 1972, when the team, then playing as Avtomobilist Zhytomyr, won the Ukrainian SSR Cup, beating a strongly favoured Shakhtar Donetsk 1โ€“0 after extra time in the final. The decisive goal was scored by Anatoliy Kotov, a forward born in Donetsk who thus sank the club from his own hometown. In 1990, the team, by then known again as Polissya, repeated the feat by winning the republican cup for a second time.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the club spent years in the lower tiers of independent Ukraine before being dissolved in 2005 due to financial problems. Zhytomyr went without a professional football club for over a decade, with only a local football academy keeping the tradition alive. The club was revived in 2016 as MFC Zhytomyr, and a year later reclaimed the historic Polissya name, adopting 1959 as its official founding date.

The team plays in green and yellow colours, and hosts its matches at the Central Stadium in Zhytomyr, the club's historic home ground, which was thoroughly rebuilt and reopened in 2021 after years of reconstruction. Since 2021 the club has been financed by the BGV Group, owner of the ATB-Market retail chain, which has allowed for stable development of both infrastructure and squad.

The club's breakthrough came in the 2022โ€“23 season, when Polissya won the Ukrainian First League and reached the Ukrainian Premier League for the first time in its history. In its debut top-flight season, 2023โ€“24, the team finished a high 5th, opening the door to the club's first-ever European competition. A year later, in 2024โ€“25, Polissya improved on that with a 3rd-place finish, the best result in its history.

In the summer of 2025, Ruslan Rotan, a former Ukraine international and longtime midfielder for Dnipro and Dynamo Kyiv, took charge of the team. Under him, Polissya faced Italy's Fiorentina in the UEFA Conference League qualifying play-off round; due to the war, the first leg, nominally a home game for the Ukrainians, was played on neutral ground in Preลกov, Slovakia, where Polissya lost 0โ€“3. The return leg in Reggio Emilia ended 3โ€“2 to the hosts, sending Fiorentina through 6โ€“2 on aggregate. Despite the elimination, the tie against a Serie A club remains the highest-profile European fixture in the club's history.
