KF Tirana KF Tirana are the most successful club in the history of Albanian football and the only side that never dropped out of the top flight from its founding until a shock relegation in 2017. The club was formed on 15 August 1920 as the Agimi Sports Association, and seven years later, on the anniversary of its founding, adopted the name Sportklub Tirana. After periods under the names 17 Nëntori and Puna Tirana, the club took its current name, KF Tirana, in 1991, following the collapse of communism in Albania.
The club won its first Albanian championship as early as 1930, in the inaugural season of official league competition, following a controversial final against KF Skënderbeu Korçë, who forfeited the deciding matches in protest at alleged bias from the football federation. Since then, Tirana have amassed a record number of league titles and domestic cup wins, sitting comfortably atop the all-time honours table in Albanian football. The club's greatest achievements on the continental stage came in the 1980s, when they reached the round of 16 in the European Cup on three occasions, still the best result ever achieved by an Albanian club in European competition. Tirana made their European debut in the 1965/66 season and to this day hold the record among Albanian clubs for the most appearances, matches and wins on the continental stage; in 1987, following a strong Cup Winners' Cup campaign, they were ranked as high as 31st in the world by the IFFHS.
The end of a 26-season unbroken run in the top division came only in the 2016/17 season, when a ninth-place finish resulted in the club's first-ever relegation from the elite. Despite that setback, Tirana's record haul of championships, Albanian Cup wins and Super Cup titles still makes them the most decorated club in Albanian football history.
