SP Tre Penne Tre Penne are the club that became the first side from San Marino to win a match in official European club competition - an achievement that, in a country with almost no international footballing success, has taken on historic significance. The club was founded in 1956 at the initiative of a group of sportsmen from the castle of San Marino, taking its name from the three peaks of Monte Titano and the colours of its predecessor club, La Serenissima.
As early as 1966, playing as a representative San Marino side, the team reached the final of an amateur tournament for small European nations held in Breganzona, Switzerland, losing only to Austria - a result still recalled today by the club's older supporters as one of the most remarkable moments in its history. A year later, in 1967, Tre Penne won their first Titan Cup. The truly historic moment, however, came only on 9 July 2013, when in the second leg of the first qualifying round of Champions League qualifying, the club defeated Armenia's Shirak Gyumri 1-0, becoming the first team from San Marino to win an official European club competition match. A year later, in 2014, Tre Penne beat Shirak again, this time 2-1, and one of the club's players, Mirko Palazzi, remains to this day the only footballer from San Marino to have scored twice in a single European qualifying match.
On the domestic front, Tre Penne rank among the most successful San Marino clubs of the past decade, with four league titles and four Titan Cups to their name. The club can also boast having produced Marco Macina, regarded as one of San Marino football's great unfulfilled talents, who became the first Sammarinese player to wear the shirt of the Italian Under-16 team before joining the youth ranks of Bologna. Known as the Biancazzurri for their blue-and-white home colours, the club play their home matches at the Fonte dell'Ovo stadium in the City of San Marino.
